Tutor: David Butler

Over 12 Tuesday afternoons, (14.00 - 15.30) beginning September 29th, we’ll discuss stories by twelve influential masters of the modern story form, along with an introductory and concluding session.

Authors to be considered might include:

Raymond Carver; J.D. Salinger; Richard Yates;
Anne Beatie; John Cheever; Amy Hempel;
Joyce Carol Oates; William Trevor; Alice Munro;
George Saunders; T.C. Boyle; Claire Keegan

*For those who took this course before, we’ll be choosing different stories.

David Butler’s novel City of Dis (New Island) was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year, 2015. Arlen House published his third story collection, White Spirits, in 2025. Awards for the short story include the Maria Edgeworth (twice), Benedict Kiely, Colm Tóibín, and Fish International
