Learning is a pleasure at the People’s College. For low cost, professionally organised courses for adults, over forty courses to choose from.

STUDENTS COMMITTEE PROJECTS

in addition to the usual events - the Christmas Social and the Students AGM & End-of-Year Social, trips abroad - the Student Committee will organise a selection of educational, social and cultural activities during the year, including visits to sites and exhibitions of topical interest and conferences and work-shops on key current issues.

CHOIR

The People's College Choir is looking for additional male members with a view to expanding its bass and tenor sections. The choir currently has 50 members (30 female and 20 male). It was founded in 1993 as part of the wider cultural programme of courses and subjects offered by the People's College. The members range from all parts of Dublin and we have an eclectic repertoire; from madrigals, spirituals, and traditional Irish airs to arrangements of modern popular songs. The choir generally performs at concerts and college social events and has participated in festivals both at home and abroad, having travelled to Denmark (2000), Italy (2004),and Austria (2008). The choir has taken part in exchanges with other choirs which brought it to France in 2006 and to Spain (2010). While the ability to read music would be a definite asset it is not by any means a requirement for membership of the choir; indeed, most of our members do not read music. If you can sing and hold a tune that is all that is required - we will teach you the rest! If you are interested in joining the choir please contact the Musical Director, Paul Walsh (via the college) or turn up in advance at one our rehearsals which are held on Tuesday nights at 8.30 pm in the Teacher's Club, Parnell Square. For new members rehearsals resume Tuesday 20th September 2011.

DEBATING SOCIETY

The People's College Debating Society will re-commence on Wednesday 28th
September 2011, at 8 pm at the Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1.
We meet every second Wednesday in the Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1.
Debating is a fun way of improving your communication and listening skills. All new members are encouraged to participate but no pressure. We place a large emphasis on the social side and inject a lot of fun into our proceedings. Each year, we debate against Toastmasters clubs - earlier this year we debated against Speechmasters in Paris.
If you are interested in attending for the autumn term or would like more information please contact any one of the following: Helen Collins, 01-6231509. Email hcoll@eircom.net; Bernie Grant, 01-8481650.; Martin Baldwin, Tel 086-3438613. Email martinjbaldwin@eircom.net

The influence of the Wide Streets Commission, the construction of grand Georgian Squares and the shift of wealth from the north to the south side of the city are among the topics discussed. Dubliners and their experience of the city is important. We will look at how the great Georgian houses of the eighteenth century became the tenements of the nineteenth century. How the very poor survived and the very rich thrived is discussed. There are a number of significant maps that detail the development of the city. Using contemporary maps, we will consider the development of the Dublin suburbs. We will also use visual and literary images to examine perceptions of the city. Dublin's relationship with other towns and cities and the relationship between Dublin and London are also addressed.

CURRENT AFFAIRS - ITS IMPACT ON YOU

Odran Reid, BA (Mod), H.Dip Ed, MSc Spatial Planning, MIED
Politics, Governance and the media all impact on our lives on a daily basis. Some people love it and some hate it, but it affects everyone's lives. Current Affairs programmes and articles appear on a daily basis - but what makes the story of the day? In this short course we will look at the political system, political parties, the media, PR and spin-doctors, examine how stories get legs and others fade away.
We live in a globalised world with global issues. Decisions are taken at an intergovernmental level and by multi national corporations that impact on our lives. But local issues seem to be more important to us and we sometimes do not feel we have control of our own destiny.
In this series of classes we will look at issues such as the economy, living with a recession, migration, the referendum process, the banks, crime, health, and transport. This course will involve lectures, discussions and debate and visits to key institutions. This course is for those interested in understanding how current affairs and government works. This course will make you think, question discuss and debate, read and all in an enjoyable setting. It will look at how the new Irish Government copes with the EU/ECB/IMF bailout and restrictions and how they address the enormous challenges that face the country.
Odran is an Economist and a Town Planner. He is self-employed consultant with wide experience in a range of activities including planning, socio economic activities, lecturing and he works with local development companies.

This course will look at the EU's historical evolution, some of the wide policy areas that it addresses, and how Ireland and the citizen engage with this complex entity. The class will be a mix of lecture and discussion, it will have guest speakers and visits.
