Peoples College for Continuing Education and Training

 

THE PEOPLE'S COLLEGE

 
for Continuing education & training  is a voluntary body with the status of charitable organisation.  Set up 1948, to provide workers' education, it continues to provide general adult education - languages, social & political studies, literature, art appreciation and cultural activities as well as personal development, basic education and communication skills - for trade unionists, their families and the general public.

 

What we do

The People’s College organises courses in the following areas:

  • Languages (Irish, English ,  French,  Italian, and Spanish)
  • Arts, Music & Creativity (Painting & Art Appreciation; Music Appreciation,   Creative Writing, Tin Whistle and Guitar) 
  • Social  Studies ( Current Affairs & History,).
  • Environment/Nature Studies (Gardening, Birds of Ireland, Archaeology)
  • Personal Development & Social  Skills ( Public Speaking,  Neuro Linguistic Programming, Pilates, Yoga,  Basic Computer Skills).

 

Staff

The College has a permanent staff of three, employing temporary staff when required and can also call on voluntary workers from among its membership. It employs some 30 tutors on a part-time basis. President of the College is Sheila Conroy, who continues to play an active role in the College. Education Director is Fionnuala Richardson Office & Accounts Manager is Gretta O’Neill.

 

Organisation

Presided over by Sheila Conroy, the College is governed by its  Central Council which is elected every second year at the Annual General Meeting  Entitled to attend & vote at  the AGM are delegates from affiliated unions and the Student Committee. Our office is attached to Congress House, the headquarters of ICTU (Irish Congress of Trade Unions) , which helps support the College. Affiliated Unions are: ASTI (Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland);  ATGWU (Amalgamated Transport & General Workers Union);  AMICUS; CPSU (Civil, Public & Services Union); CWU (Communication Workers Union; IFUT (Irish Federation of University Teachers); IMPACT (Irish Municipal, Public & Civil trade Union; INTO (Irish National Teachers Union; MANDATE ; PSEU (Public Service Executive Union; SIPTU (Services Industrial Professional & Technical Union); TUI (Teachers’ Union of Ireland); UCATT (Union of Construction, Allied Trades & Technicians); TSSA (Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association).

 

Student Commitee

The Student Committee, elected by the students of the College, organises social and cultural events during the year;  helps with administration & organisation of the College work. It is consulted on the drawing up of the Syllabus every year.

We also have an active Debating Society - www.pcds.ie and Choir.
